In his introduction to this most unique work, Chev. Joseph Galea writes:

"The scope of this Handbook is to help the students and research-workers
in their pursuits into the manuscript material of the various Archives in
Malta and Gozo.

Conscious of the fact that there has never been such a publication on Maltese
Chronology, I have embarked on this venture because in my work as an
archivist I have often been approached and asked for help touching on many
items dealt with in this Handbook.

I have gleaned information from the unpublished sources of the manuscript
material in the Archives of the Order of St John, the volumes of the Università
of Malta and Gozo, the manuscript volumes of the Archives of the Cathedral
Museum at Mdina, other manuscripts in the National Library and private
collections; for other information of general interest, such as the lists of the
Viceroys of Sicily, the Kings of England, France and Spain, I have perused
the printed handbooks.

This first modest attempt of Maltese Chronology, it is hoped, will be useful
to all lovers of Maltese history.

Finally, my most sincere thanks go to my dear friend Raymond Michael
Cassar for editing the manuscripts and for all the support and encouragement
