BRITISH GOVERNORS in Malta
While British military presence in Malta spanned between 1799 and 1979, i.e. 180
years, British rule officially began in 1813 and endured until 1974, circa 160 years.
In 1974 the Maltese Islands became a Republic and the last of Britain's appointed
governors, who at the time was a Maltese citizen, became the Republic's first
President.
Malta had achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1964, but Britain's
Governor General had remained a part of the islands' political system until 1974.
